The Olympus Theatre
‘Seussical’ is the first major production at the brand new Olympus Theatre in Filton. The theatre is encompassed within the West of England Institute of Specialist Education (WISE) Campus and belongs to South West Academy of Dramatic Arts (SWADA). The Campus has seen an investment of £17.5 million and also boasts a 500 seat indoor sports hall, Astroturf pitch, recording studios, dance studios and rehearsal rooms.
As soon as the keys to the Theatre were handed over to SWADA, Theatreworx took the opportunity to visit with Gerri (Seussical Director), Mark (Seussical MD), Stewart (Seussical Assistant Choreographer), Les (Seussical Stage Manager) and Simon (Theatreworx Director) all in attendance.
Once inside the Olympus Theatre the overall appearance is similar to London’s National Theatre, but on a smaller scale. The stage area is vast and a balcony that surrounds the auditorium provides ample space to house the Orchestra.
As you might expect from a new Theatre the facilities are first class. Large dressing rooms, showers, a scenery store and the latest technical equipment will keep performers and crew happy.
Audiences will not be disappointed either, as the fully tiered seating arrangements affords everyone a good view of the stage. Large comfortable seating with lots leg room, as well as under seat air conditioning will be an extra treat for regular theatre goer and as you might expect from any good Theatre the Olympus has its own bar and spacious lounge.
Being just minuets away from Junction 1of the M32 and with free on site parking the Olympus Theatre is very easy to get to. Should you wish to leave the car at home Bristol Parkway Train Station is only 5 minuets walk away.
Could ‘The Olympus’ be the missing link in Bristol’s Theatre line-up? Having visited, Theatreworx certainly think so. Come and judge for yourself and catch ‘Seussical’ at the same time!
